Things to do in Phoenix, AZ in December
December is the perfect time for an avid outdoorsman to visit Phoenix. Daily high temperatures range between the 50s and 70s, most of the snakes are hibernating, and the trails are safer than ever. Plus, the Sonoran Desert offers unique adventures that you just won't find anywhere else.
Not sure where to start? We can help! Here's a quick look at our favorite outdoor excursions to enjoy in metro Phoenix in December.
Camelback Mountain: Hiking + Rock Climbing

Yes, Camelback Mountain does have a certain...reputation. Rescues are so frequent that authorities actually built a helipad in its gap.
However, it's worth noting that rescue season occurs between late spring and early autumn - when temperatures are scorching. The vast majority of rescues are heat related, and that's never a concern in December.
So, Camelback Mountain is definitely worth visiting in December. It offers two trails to the top: Echo Canyon and the Cholla Trail.
Echo Canyon is more challenging but leads to crags that are perfect for rock climbing. The Cholla Trail, while slightly easier, offers more scrambling and is still decently challenging.
The top perfectly blends view of the rugged desert landscape with the Metro Phoenix cityscape.
The Superstition Ridgeline Hike
The Valley's most iconic hike is also most easily accessible in December. Temperatures always fall within a safe range, but it's not yet far enough into winter to become icy. And trust us, you don't want to hike this trail when it's icy.
The Superstition Ridgeline is an epic trail that traverses the high elevation of the Superstition Mountain range. You'll enjoy surreal views and wildlife encounters along the 11.1 mile trek.
Just remember, most of the trail is about 10-15 degrees cooler than the lower elevations. It'll also be much cooler in the morning than around midday. Since this is a longer hike, we recommend wearing layers that are easy to shed and pack. We offer a complete, expert guide on what to pack to hike the Superstition Ridgeline.
Paddle Canyon Lake
Kayak and paddle boards are still available for rent in December at Canyon Lake.
This reservoir just east of the Valley is situated in the heart of a gorgeous mountain range. Sierra vistas are plentiful and the ducks are friendly. The water is calm, and there are plenty of small tributaries where kayaks and paddleboards can escape from boat traffic.
If you're anything like us, waters activities have a strange way of making you hungry. Fortunately, the marina also has a nice restaurant and restrooms.
There are also plenty of access points where you can put in your own kayak.
Note: Canyon Lake will be closed during December of 2026 for maintenance. If you happen to be visiting during that time, we have a great alternative for you.
Tempe Town Lake

Tempe Town Lake also offers kayak and paddleboard rentals in December. It offers great views of downtown Tempe and several nearby mountains. It's also a short drive from downtown Phoenix.
You can also bring your own kayaks and paddleboards. We've even seen people floating along in their own sailboats!
While there, you may want to bring your bike and ride along the Rio Salado Pathway.
