Things to do in November in Phoenix

November really kicks off the season of exploration in Phoenix. Temperatures are finally guaranteed to be safe all day. Snakes begin hibernating. Oasis trees start changing for the fall season.

And yet, things still aren't quite as chaotic as they'll get when the holiday season is in full swing. November offers the best balance of solace and great weather. Here's a complete list of the top things to do in November in Phoenix.

Why Visit Phoenix in November?

Perfect Weather

Daily high temperatures typically only reach the mid 80s during early November. By the middle of the month, they're usually between the mid 60s and low 70s.

Phoenix is already known for its dry weather, and November is one of the Valley's driest months. That means an even lower chance of rain ruining your plans.

More Critters Begin Hibernating

Many snakes, spiders, and scorpions begin hibernating during November. That means fewer encounters when exploring nearby trails.

To be clear, not all dangerous animals will be hibernating. You should still be cautious when exploring the desert in November. But, fewer encounters is still something to celebrate.

Our Favorite Things to do in November in Phoenix

Now that you know why November is a great time to visit Phoenix, here are a few things you should do during your stay.

Hiking Areas

Phoenix has many hiking trails within its city limits. They tend to be safer than typical trails for two reasons:

  • they're convenient and draw crowds
  • they usually offer reliable cell service

So, if you do need help, there will almost always be others nearby. And, if you need to make an urgent call or download trail maps, you'll usually have a reliable connection.

Piestewa Peak

Clouds over Phoenix giving the November sunset from Piestewa Peak an incredible, unique "angry eye" appearance

Piestewa Peak rises as the highest summit in the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. It's a popular trail for both sunrise and sunset hikes. If you come during sunset, there's a good chance you'll encounter some ringtail cats at the top. But be careful, as this is also when the scorpions come out.

Piestewa Peak is also a popular trail for building endurance. It's not very long (just over a mile), but that short distance comes with steep elevation gain. Hikers find that it helps them prepare for more difficult hikes, such as the Flat Iron in the Superstition Mountains.

South Mountain Preserve

Phoenix's South Mountain Preserve offers an extensive trail network. It's a great park for hikers and mountain bikers of all skill levels. And, you won't mind the excessive lack of shade as much during the cooler weeks of November.

Just remember to download the AllTrails app. There are many trail crossings, so it can be easy to get lost. Fortunately, cell service is pretty reliable throughout most of the park.

Papago Park

Looking for a quick, easy hike on family-friendly trails? Papago Park offers large buttes that are easy to hike and flat trails that wind through the desert. It features  several modern facilities and and is also a great place for mountain biking and running.

Essential Gear to Make the Most of Your November Visit

Trail Exploration

  • Lightweight hydration daypack: temperatures may be cooling off, but this is still the desert. You'll need to stay hydrated even on the easier trails. The affordable VPBAGE foldable backpack features just enough storage in the back for water and a few snacks. It also features a convenient phone pocket on the front strap.
  • Layered apparel: we recommend a moisture-wicking base layer for chilly mornings. Nothing too thick since temperatures can warm up quickly in the afternoon during fall. Convertible pants are also a great choice for November hikes in the desert. Temperatures will typically begin in the upper 50s but could reach up to the 80s by afternoon.
  • Trail shoes/boots: desert terrain is pretty rough. You'll need a decent pair of Merrell or Salomon hiking boots to trek the terrain with confidence. Both boots are also breathable, a great feature as temperatures warm up during November afternoons.

Urban Exploration

  • Comfortable walking shoes: I personally love the Puma Tazon 6 Cross Trainer sneakers when exploring Phoenix They are both stylish and extremely comfortable. They're also surprisingly affordable.
  • Compact sunscreen: Phoenix is known for its plentiful sunshine. Toss a compact container of paraben-free sunscreen in your daypack to keep your skin protected.
  • Urban sling day bag: keep your essentials secure and nearby with a SKYSPER sling bag. It's a great place to secure valuables, snacks, and electronics for long days spent in the city. It's also easily adjustable when you need to add or shed layers during November.
